The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) requires fashion brands to provide Digital Product Passports, but it deliberately leaves the how open. Whether you embed an NFC chip, print a QR code, or leverage existing RFID infrastructure, the regulation focuses on data accessibility—not the mechanism.

This flexibility is both a blessing and a complication. Your choice of carrier directly affects per-unit cost, customer experience, and operational integration. Here's a practical breakdown to help compliance teams make an informed decision.

The Three Main Options

QR Code

Printed label or woven tag. Scanned via smartphone camera. No embedded electronics.

NFC Tag

Embedded chip activated by smartphone tap. Read range ~4 cm. Works through fabric.

UHF RFID

Technical Considerations

Durability and Placement

QR codes degrade with washing and wear. Placement matters: a QR on a care label survives longer than one on a hangtag that gets discarded. NFC tags embedded in seams or woven labels withstand 50+ wash cycles when properly encapsulated (NFC Forum, 2022).

Data Capacity

QR codes can encode URLs of 2,000+ characters—more than sufficient for a DPP link. NFC tags typically hold 500–8,000 bytes depending on chip type. For DPP purposes, both only need to store a URL pointing to the full passport; the data lives in the cloud, not on the carrier.

Security and Authentication

Standard QR codes offer no inherent security—anyone can copy them. NFC chips can include cryptographic signatures that verify authenticity, making them valuable for luxury goods and anti-counterfeiting. The GS1 Digital Link standard supports authentication parameters in both formats (GS1, 2024).
