Physical Labeling: Where and How to Apply DPP QR Codes on Garments

A practical guide to label types, placement options, and durability requirements for making your Digital Product Passport accessible directly from the garment.

The Digital Product Passport isn't just a database entry. It's a physical experience: a consumer picks up a garment, scans a code, and accesses its full transparency record. That moment depends entirely on one thing — whether you've applied the QR code correctly.

This guide covers the practical decisions every brand must make: what type of label to use, where to place it, and how to ensure it survives the life of the product.

What the regulation actually requires

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) mandates that products carry a "data carrier" providing access to the Digital Product Passport (European Commission, 2024). For textiles, this almost always means a QR code — the regulation explicitly references ISO/IEC 18004 as the standard for 2D matrix codes.

The key requirements are:

  • Accessibility: The code must be easy for consumers to locate and scan
  • Durability: It must remain functional throughout the product's expected lifespan
  • Legibility: Minimum size and contrast ratios must ensure reliable scanning

The regulation does not prescribe exactly where the code must go or what material the label must be. That flexibility is intentional — but it also means brands must make informed choices.

Label types compared

There are four primary methods for applying QR codes to garments. Each has distinct advantages depending on your product category, price point, and aesthetic requirements.

Woven labels

For brands prioritising longevity and premium feel, woven labels remain the gold standard. Modern high-density weaving can achieve the resolution needed for reliable QR scanning, though this requires working with suppliers capable of 200+ threads per inch.

The key consideration: QR codes need sufficient "quiet zone" (the blank margin around the code). Most suppliers recommend a minimum 15mm × 15mm code area for reliable scanning on woven substrates.

Printed care labels

The most cost-effective option for volume production. The existing care label infrastructure — already mandatory under Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 — provides a natural home for the DPP QR code.

Critical factor: ink specification. Standard care label inks were designed for text and symbols, not dense QR matrices. Request wash-fast, sublimation-resistant inks and demand test reports showing legibility after the relevant ISO 6330 wash cycles.

Heat transfer

Popular in sportswear and athleisure where traditional labels create discomfort. Heat transfers bond directly to the fabric, eliminating the raised edge of sewn labels.

The challenge is stretch: QR codes distort when the underlying fabric stretches, potentially making them unscannable. Work with your supplier to test transfers on the actual fabric composition at maximum expected stretch.

The regulation offers flexibility, but placement decisions should consider three factors:

1. Consumer findability Research from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (2023) indicates that consumers expect product information in familiar locations — primarily where care labels already sit. Placing your DPP code near existing labels reduces friction.

2. Scanning ergonomics The code must be accessible without the consumer contorting the garment. Side seams work well; interior pocket corners do not. Consider whether the garment will typically be on a hanger, folded, or worn when scanned.

3. Brand aesthetic For luxury positioning, visibility may conflict with minimalist design goals. Some brands are exploring "reveal" approaches — a discreet symbol indicating where to find the full QR inside the garment.

Durability testing protocol

A QR code that becomes unscannable invalidates your compliance. Before committing to production, implement a testing protocol:

Request test certificates from your label supplier, but also conduct your own verification on finished garments. The interaction between label material, attachment method, and garment fabric can produce unexpected failures.
